Tips from the Global Village Staff:

Furniture Care:

Regular care and maintenance of your furniture will give you years of enjoyment and satisfaction from it. Here are a few of our top tips for looking after the furniture that makes your house a home.
•Invest in a good cleaner, wax or polish to protect your furniture from scratches and abrasions.
•Dust attracts moisture, which can accumulate and soften the finish on your furniture, therefore clean and polish your furniture regularly.
•Follow the manufactures instructions on how to care for your furniture. Upholstery cleaning codes mean the following:
•S: Clean the fabric sparingly with a dry cleaning solvent that’s water free.
•W: Clean fabric with a water based solution, like a mild detergent or water / foam upholster cleaner.
•WS: Depending on the stain, use a water based solution, dry cleaning solvent or upholstery shampoo.
•X: Fabric should be professionally cleaned only.

Measuring for Furniture:

When you are choosing a new piece of furniture for your home, it is very important that the piece you choose fits the space you want it for. It is also important that the piece works with the proportions and dimensions of the other pieces of furniture in the room and the room itself. Here are 5 easy steps to help you when measuring for furniture:

Remember: measure twice and pick once!

1. What size is your room?
Measure your room carefully and ideally produce a rough sketch of the layout, including doors, windows etc. Global Village staff can then help advise you on the best size piece for your room.

2. Measurements of existing furniture?
Decide where you want the new piece of furniture to go in your room and take the measurements of any existing furniture in that space.

3. Will it fit in my space?
Check the dimensions for the piece of furniture you are interested in. Note all the numbers for width x depth x height (e.g., 87.5" W x 38" D x 36.5" H).

3. Will it work in my space?
Lay pieces of newspaper on the floor of your room to corresponds with the width and depth of the furniture you are considering and see if it fits. Will it block any entrances? Would another piece fill the space better?

4. Is there room to manoeuvre?
Measure the entryways, doors, height clearances and stairways to make sure the piece you want can make it into the desired location. Also note obstacles such as, lights, railings, ceiling fans, etc.

Choosing the Perfect Sofa:

•Measure your living room carefully and ideally produce a rough sketch of the layout, including doors, windows etc., this will help you map out the best position, size and number of sofas you need. Our salespeople can also advise you.

•If you want an eclectic look, you should mix different styles and colours with several accessories; this will give a lovely warm feel to your living room.

•For a designer look, keep the room relatively uncluttered and minimise the colour palette to about two or three colours.

•Global Village salespeople are all trained in interior design and can help you achieve the look you want.

•To test the quality of the sofa, lift it from one of the bottom edges to feel the weight of it. In general, the heavier the sofa is the better the quality - as there is more wood used in the frame construction.

•For the quality of the fabric, the key is wearability. Our salespeople will be able to tell you about the wearability of our different sofa’s.

•When it comes to the sofa’s spring system, sinuous wire or S-type springs are the standard. You should feel the springs when you push down on the sofa.

•To test the quality of the leather, feel it between your fingers. The more soft and buttery it feels, the higher the quality. Leathers are graded by the size, location, and the severity of the natural blemishes that are a part of all hides.

•To decide between a leather or fabric sofa, weigh up the pros and cons of each. Leather is unbeatable in that it is more difficult to stain and fabric is great in that it is superb for comfort. It is really a personal choice…depending on your preferences and lifestyle, such as whether you have kids in your house a lot and want the ease of maintenance of leather, or if you love the soft comfort of fabric!

• Lastly, the standard of delivery of your sofa into your home is very important.

• Dump and Run - this is the term used! - Sofas are carried into your house and are left wrapped and unassembled.

• Gold service – The Global Village way - Sofas are placed into the room of your choice, all wrapping is removed and legs attached. You then check that all is perfect before we leave.
